Great Schooner Race a Huge Success: The Mary Day Secures Bragging Rights in 37th Annual Event
Rockland, MAINE— On Friday July 5th, with beautiful, hot, sunny weather and fair winds, the 37th annual Great Schooner Race was a huge success, with the schooner Mary Day crossing the finish first to secure the Cutty Sark Award and bragging rights until next year’s race. 17 boats participated in this year’s race.
Captain Barry King accepted his trophy at the evening Awards Ceremony, noting that, “This event would not be possible without the support and enthusiasm of the thousands of devoted guests who sign up to experience the thrill of sailing on these traditional vessels each season.”
Kendall, a guest who raced upon the Stephen Taber, had this to say, “It was just a thrill! From the scenery, to the camaraderie, to the absolute intensity of racing to the finish line – I can’t say enough good things about the whole experience!”

According to Meg Maiden, Marketing Director of the Maine Windjammer Association, “This year’s event lived up to its name—it was a truly Great Schooner Race! We had a strong turnout of vessels, perfect weather and guests, crews and spectators had a ton of fun. While we have to wait a year to do it again, fortunately we have next Friday’s Maine Windjammer Parade to look forward to, which will attract many of the same schooners for another fun afternoon of close-up sailing.”
