Annual WoodenBoat Sail-In Attracts Windjammer Fleet
Blue Hill, Maine— On Wednesday, September 11, the Maine windjammer fleet will congregate at the WoodenBoat Publications waterfront in Brooklin for the fleet’s final gathering of the 2013 season.
To celebrate the tradition of working sail, the 27th annual WoodenBoat Sail-In will begin at approximately 3:00 p.m. with the dramatic arrival of a dozen schooners. These historic vessels, many of which were built at the turn of the century, represent the largest fleet of merchant ships still operating under sail in America. Eight of the windjammers have been designated National Historic Landmarks.
Hosted by the Maine Windjammer Association, the WoodenBoat Sail-In represents an opportunity for spectators to view the entire windjammer fleet before the season closes on Columbus Day Weekend. From 4:00-5:30 p.m., Sail-In festivities will include music by the Flash in the Pans Steel Band and fresh-steamed mussels.
