Maine Windjammer Sailing: Your Bucket List Soft Adventure
Rockland, ME – Sailing on board a Maine Windjammer is a bucket list adventure and such a wonderful way to totally unplug from the internet-filled world and experience nature up-close and personal. Guests experience Maine in the most unique way possible—aboard a historic sailing ship that is guided by the seafaring traditions that established the state.
Aboard any of the vessels in the Maine Windjammer Association fleet, guests will come to know a part of Maine largely inaccessible to cars and cruise ships. Imagine anchoring off Holbrook Island and being surrounded by granite, spruce and pine. A nearby ledge has a half-dozen seals lazily warming up in the afternoon sun as ospreys chirp overhead and scan the blue waters for mackerel. Your captain sends a boat ashore so you can walk off that incredible dinner on Holbrook’s nature trail. A Maine windjammer can get you there!
Hoisting sails; climbing aboard and off via a wooden ladder, exploring deserted islands, grabbing the paddle board, sailing dinghy or kayak and exploring beautiful anchorages after the windjammer set anchor for the night – these are all among the adventures on board a Maine Windjammer. Each trip, you’ll row ashore for a Downeast lobster bake on an uninhabited beach, offering the chance for hikes along the rocky shores, sea-glass collecting and more. Not to mention just picked-from-the-sea lobsters followed by s’mores!
The Maine Windjammer Association is the largest fleet of working windjammers in the USA. Exploring Maine islands and other ports of call on foot., trekking to the closest general store for that special Maine jam; or checking out an island eclectic bookstore fills the afternoons. Taking a leap of faith from the deck of the schooner into the brisk, Gulf of Maine waters, for a swim and the communal closeness of fellow passengers, without the intrusion of the Internet, much as did passengers in the early-mid-20th Century are great parts of the appeal to active seniors. Then to sit at the Captain’s table and hear tales of the schooner’s glorious past and to see the night skies, without light pollution or glorious sunrises and sunsets inspire adventure-loving travelers that join us.
Once underway, everything on board is included in the cost of the cruise. Guests board the boats which stay at the dock the first night, and they’re on their own to explore either Rockland or Camden, where they are berthed. Then the next morning their 3, 4, 6 or even 10-day cruise takes off. From that point on, everything is included – breakfast, lunch, afternoon hors d’oeuvres and dinners, plus all the nature experiences you want. You’re welcome to bring your own wine, beer or spirits on board. Some boats include this in their cruises, others don’t. The average cost of these cruises is about $200 per person per day. The vacation…priceless! Prices vary depending upon the time of year and the boat, of course, but most consider this a medium-priced experience.
