Maine Windjammer Fleet Announces New Specialty Cruises for 2013

Mid-coast, MAINE— Passionate about wine or birding? Always wanted to explore Acadia National Park or take a night sail during the full moon? This year, the Maine Windjammer Association captains are offering a new roster of cruises that will feed the mind, tempt the taste buds and get guests thinking.

While relaxation is the number one goal of any cruise, now it’s possible to combine a day of gorgeous sailing on Penobscot Bay with a wide array of fun activities. This year, Captain Thomas of the Isaac H. Evans is offering many new cruises including an amateur astronomy cruise with astronomer Roy Hewitt; a four-day cruise with one of the best-loved folk singers in the Northwest, Hank Cramer; and a cancer care fundraising cruise.

For food lovers, how about a week of wine tasting and gourmet food? Captain McHenry of the Angelique is offering a cooking and wine cruise and, though every windjammer cruise serves award-winning food that’s been featured on the likes of Gourmet, Saveur, Rachel Ray and the New York Times, these wine and food cruises really focus on the culinary arts and wine appreciation. For beer connoisseurs, how about a June 17th “Brews Cruise” aboard the Schooner Mary Day — you can even try your hand a brewing a batch of nut brown ale underway!

For nature lovers, Captain Wells of the Lewis R. French is offering a guided birding cruise or you can explore Acadia National Park – the most-often visited National Park in the US – when you sail aboard the Angelique. Ever wonder how Maine’s landscape got to be so spectacular or why the Earth is made up of layers? Hop aboard a geology cruise with Captain Files of the Victory Chimes.

And what about the true old salts – people who love sailing so much they want to sail at night? Now it’s possible aboard theAmerican Eagle during a four-day sail in August, with a spectacular summer moon waxing toward full. That’s sure to be a once-in-a-lifetime moment.

These new cruises join the tried and true roster of specialty cruises offered year to year including a beloved Pirates cruise for the young and the young-at-heart; a story-telling cruise where yarn spinning is the name of the game; whale and puffin scouting; knitting; and photography cruises featuring professional photographers who are on-hand to guide the amateur and capture that once-in-a-lifetime image. Whether you love lighthouses, wild birds or chocolates, there’s a windjammer cruise sure to ignite your passion!
