Maine Windjammers Offer Cruises Tailored to Special Interests and Hobbies

Mid-Coast, Maine— Passionate about wine or yoga? Always wanted to explore Acadia National Park or take a full-moon night sail? The Maine Windjammer Association offers a wide range of 3- to 10-day specialty cruises that will feed the mind, tempt the taste buds and actively engage guests of all ages.

The 2017 list of specialty cruises includes:

  • For the mind and body – Spend a few days learning how to improve your health and well-being with reiki, massage, meditation and yoga on the deck of a windjammer! Sign up for a knitting or photography course led by a pro, or a book club cruise focused on the history of the Maine coast. Kayaking cruises offer guests a new way to actively explore Maine’s coast and islands.
  • For foodies – Maine is known for its foodie scene. The windjammers’ on-the-water chefs have tiny galley kitchens where they turn out unexpected incredible fare for their guests. Many ships have gourmet, wine, beer or even chocolate tasting cruises on tap for 2017, featuring guest chefs, farm to table dining, handpicked wines, locally made chocolates and craft beers
  • For music lovers – choose from an array of trips that feature professional musicians: bluegrass, folk, country and brine are just a few genres offered this season. Love story-telling? Check out Gary Crocker’s Maine humor cruise!
  • For families – Windjammers are offering more trips geared to families with younger kids that include extra time ashore for exploring and hands-on activities. Grandparent & grandchild trips available, too!
  • For the wildlife watcher and naturalist – Windjammer captains have great luck finding puffins, finback, humpback and minke whales and other marine life on special off-shore trips. Every cruise is likely to offer close-up views of seals, porpoises, pelagic birds and eagles soaring overhead.
  • For the adventurer – Be completely immersed in sea-life with experiential sailing instruction. Guests have the opportunity to steer, plot a course, stitch a ditty bag, and if interested, go aloft to stow the topsails. Become part of the crew and even participate in schooner races.
  • Travel beyond Penobscot Bay – There are cruises that visit Boothbay Harbor, Down East to the Canadian border, Gloucester, and this year a 10-day trip to Boston to participate in Tall Ship festivities. Several windjammers offer unique excursion trips to Acadia National Park where guests can spend an afternoon exploring the Park by guided tour.

The 2017 season also includes cruises themed around lighthouses, foliage, pirates and special gatherings of the fleet. For more info on specialty cruises, visit www.sailmainecoast.com.
